ESI Scheme is a social security and beneficiary scheme. As per provisions of Section 58 of the Employees State Insurance Act. 1948, the Scheme was implemented in the State of Assam w.e.f. 25.12.1958 with opening of five dispensaries namely ESI Dispensaries at Dhuburi, Uzanbazar (Guwahati), Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Makum. In the year 1964 AMO was appointed as head of the ESI Scheme Assam. Today there are 26 Dispensaries and one diagnostic centre.The State govt. is responsible to provide full medical care to the Insured persons(IPs) and there dependent family members.
The ESI Scheme is under the Govt. of Assam, Labour Welfare Department, and run in collaboration with ESI Corporation, for the benefits of the working population under the various organization sectors like Factories, Shops Hotels, Cinemas, Road Motor Transportation, News Paper Establishment, Private Educational and Medical Institutions etc
